TASK ORGANIZATION AND SUPPORTING FORCES:
3-506th Currahees Delta Battery, 2nd Battalion (Airborne), 320th Artillery 3-8th Infantry (Dragoons) 192nd Assault Helicopter Company (Stallions & Sidekicks) Pacific Architects and Engineers (PA&E) - LZ BETTY GuestsMISSION: Conduct 16th annual reunion in force to rendezvous with fellow teammates (battalion, task force, and other units) and special guests.
CONCEPT OF OPERATION: Reunion organizer, Jerry Berry, began informing members of both the 3-506th and TF 3-506th unit members, as well as some families of KIAs, immediately following the 2011 TUNICA, Mississippi reunion, that he and Donna would organize their last rendezvous for the 16th Annual 'Stand Alone Battalion' reunion, which needed to be in Reno, Nevada. Over the following 10 - 11 months, all major hotels in Reno were contacted, and the Circus Circus Hotel & Casino offered the best deal for room price and space to accommodate the planned five-day event. The next seven months were spent coordinating with the hotel, polling members and KIA families, identifying committee members, developing agendas--reunion, memorial/banquet night program--selecting dinner menus for the special night, etc., in preparation for the special rendezvous.

Tuesday, June 12 - Attendees for the
16th Annual 3-506th
Rendezvous began checking into their hotel
rooms on opening day, with a few arriving the previous day. The Hospitality Room was opened at 10:00
A.M. The Registration & Sign-in
book was functional throughout each day--mornings and afternoons. The first
person to sign-in was none other than one of the Currahees' finest
reconnaissance (Currahee Shock Force 1967/68 "Boat Trooper") Tony
Martisauskas. Accompanying Tony was his cousin, Frank Kaminski, both from
DeMotte, IN, who had driven straight through to Reno. [Note:
in case you want to see a photo of each individual attending the reunion, I
have added his, her or their photo adjacent to their name in the attendees list
below. Wednesday, June 13 thru
Friday, June 15 (Afternoon). Attendees for the reunion continued to arrive at the
Circus Circus and sign in. During each
day, attendees visited the various casinos, gift shops and local attractions offered in and around
Reno and Lake Tahoe. Some members preferred just to hang out in the hospitality
room and make deposits down in the casino. Many thanks to Steve and
Linda Katzer for contributing a large quantity of snacks for the tables in the hospitality
room. Tommy "Iceman" Kirk, PSG Richard Saunders, Ralph Burdett
and a few other Currahees made sure the ice coolers were well stocked with
ice and liquid refreshments, as well as, made a number of trips to the local
liquor PX. Thanks to trooper Burl Summers for bringing two wash tubs
for keeping our iced down refreshments in. The Special PowerPoint Presentation--My Gift To You--which
was scheduled for Wednesday evening got moved to Thursday evening. Thursday,
June 14 - Thursday was a repeat of
Wednesday, i.e. check-in, socializing in the hospitality room, dropping
dimes at the local casinos. During the evening, Jerry's Power Point presentation, which followed the deployment
and tour of duty of the 3-506th in Vietnam, was shown. PSG Dan Braxton brought to the reunion everything in way of digital and sound equipment for
showing DVDs, movies, etc. "Pony-tail" Paul also showed a
Vietnam DVD.

finale for our annual rendezvous. The day was a repeat of the previous
three days up until approximately 5:00 P.M., when attendees moved from the
hospitality room to the hotel convention center for the evening

Our MC for this year's banquet night program was none other than Paul "Ponytail" Cauley (medic, Co. C 1970/71), who did an outstanding job. MC "Ponytail" Paul opened the program with a short introduction and welcomed everyone to the 16th Annual 3-506th Rendezvous. Throughout the program, he entertained the audience by telling some very funny jokes.
Next, MC "Ponytail" Paul turned the microphone over to 1Lt. Ron Belanger (Plt. Ldr. Co. A, 3-506th 1967/68), who conducted the traditional unit roll call, with Delta troopers once again dominating the rendezvous, with Charlie Company close behind. Lt. Belanger followed up with a reminder that President Obama recently presented the Medal of Honor to SP4 Leslie Sabo's family. SP4 Sabo was killed on May 10, 1970 in Cambodia. Chaplain Otis Smith (Bn Chaplain HHC 1967/68) gave the invocation.
Following the excellent buffet dinner, a special DVD--"In Memory of our KIAs" created by Jerry Berry was shown. Help in creating the music for the DVD included Sal Morales and Dan Braxton. Next, Donna Berry introduced our special guests.
Presentations and Special Recognitions
Following the recognition of special guests, the MC
introduced the first of the
guest speakers--Warrant Officer Charles
"Pat" Dyer--former helicopter slick pilot "Polecat
405", who recalled his tour at LZ BETTY with the 192nd Assault Helicopter
Company in support the 3-506th and the honor it was to serve alongside the
Currahees. The next guest speaker was Cpt.
James Godfrey "Tiger Shark 35" (individual on right in
photo) who flew both slicks and gunships from the 192nd Assault Helicopter
Company out of LZ BETTY in support of the Currahees. Followed each guest
speaker's presentation, Lt. Belanger presented him with a special
screaming eagle statue mounted on an oak base with an engraved plate.
The third guest speaker for the evening was Chaplain
Otis Smith (Bn Chaplain HHC 1967/68), who gave an inspiring
recollection of the early weeks and months when the battalion was forming, as
well as, during the war games exercises and training of the 3-506th prior to
deployment to South Vietnam and what it was like for him to serve as battalion
chaplain. The final speaker for the evening was
PSG Cliff Shaul, Platoon Sergeant, 3/C/3-8th Infantry, 4th
ID, who spoke on
patriotism and our duty as American Citizens to preserve the legacy of our
forefathers. He also spoke about the "Duty, Honor and Country"
aspect in reference to 1Lt. Robert Phillips, commander of Charlie Company,
3-8th Infantry who was killed on LZ Fox in Cambodia. His story is found
in "Twelve Days In May" under the title "Hell On A Small
LZ".
The 'Stand Alone Battalion' eagle statues represent special recognition and are presented to first-time attendees--Task Force and battalion officers, medics and platoon sergeants; as well as special guests--who are considered well deserving of this special recognition, since they were oftentimes directly responsible for the lives of many during his tour of duty in Vietnam. Over the years, there have been a number of eagle designs; and among these have been Eagle 1, Eagle 2, Eagle 3, Eagle 4. Several earlier versions of the "Stand Alone Battalion" eagle are not shown. Each eagle is meant to represent not only the "Screaming Eagle" of the 101st Airborne Division, but also the proud national symbol of our country. This recognition (the eagle) is sometimes presented to groups from outside the 3-506th who supported or operated alongside the Currahees, i.e. the 192nd Assault Helicopter Company recipients at this reunion. Each recipient was brought to the front and presented with an eagle statue mounted on an oak base containing an engraved plate with the soldier's name and rank, unit and position, tour dates and location. Each plate was engraved with a verse from Shakespeare that reads "We Few, We Happy Few, We Band Of Brothers; For He Today That Sheds His Blood With Me Shall Be My Brother", or in some occasions, "There Is A Destiny That Makes Us Brothers; None Goes His Way Alone. All That We Send Into The Lives Of Others Comes Back Into Our Own" Each eagle base is specially cut from select oak by a local craftsman in Libby, MT. The plaques are then hand-sanded, stained, and finished by Jerry and Donna Berry. A felt cushion glued to the bottom of each base adds the final touch to a beautiful piece of wood. The individual engraved plates attached to the oak base are also fashioned by a local craftsman in Libby, MT. These eagle awards are usually presented to the recipients by an officer(s) who served during the same tour of duty as the individual, or by an officer from another tour. Three of the four special recognition awards were made, with the exception of Dan Linn's, who had to cancel attending at the very last moment due to emergency surgery. Dan's recognition was for his contribution to the "My Gift To You" and "Twelve Days In May". We hope this tradition will continue within the "Stand Alone Battalion" Group.
During the Open Mic & Closing Remarks" portion of the program, Donna and Jerry Berry took the podium where Donna read a special tribute, "Memories Are Forever Young",
detailing and culminating their long labor of love involvement with our 3-506th Group (click on the above blue link to read her entire presentation) . "We are sad to say to you this night that this will be our last reunion as your hosts. After many hours of discussion, we have come to the conclusion that extenuating circumstances such as age, finances, medical conditions, as well as family concerns, have now made the task of organizing annual reunions unsustainable. It is our hope that others within our group will pick up the torch and let the flame of camaraderie, patriotism, and family continue to burn brightly for the legacy of the 3-506th, until the last Vietnam Era Currahee “Stands Alone”". It has yet been decided if Jerry will continue to maintain the "Stand Alone Battalion" website. He will make a final decision on that issue before the end of the year. The finale of the evening was a special drawing for door prizes consisting of an engraved Currahee Zippo Lighter, a specially sewed (by Donna Berry) "Freedom Is Not Free" burgundy throw blanket, two packets of Currahee Notecards (two separate prizes), a tote bag with sewed on Currahee and Screaming Eagle patches, a Currahee Stein, a bottle cover with sewed on Screaming Eagle patch, a Psychological Warfare Leaflets of the Vietnam War book DVD (authored by Jerry and Donna Berry), and a signed (by all attendees) soft cover Stand Alone Battalion book. Each winning ticket was drawn by Donna Berry with the exception of the last prize, which was drawn by Rosie Lira-Garza, the daughter of Sgt. Amador Lira (Co. B Boat Trooper 67/68). Following the door prize drawing, the MC conducted a live auction to benefit our group website. Items auctioned off included a large Screaming Eagle Throw Blanket made by Donna Berry, a bottle of elderberry wine (2008 vintage from the Berrypatch in Montana), autographed and framed poems--"My Gift To You" from Jerry's book with same title; and "We Were Soldiers" from the book "Twelve Days in May". Other items included a beautifully framed picture of LZ BETTY, and a specially made oak plaque with engraved plate of the history of the 506th Infantry.
The Benediction was delivered by Chaplain Otis Smith.
Saturday, June 16. Saturday was a wind-down day for attendees. Those who were previously unable to enjoy the sights and scenes of Reno did so. The ladies also got in some last-minute shopping at the Casino Gift Shops. Throughout the week, the hospitality room was busy with reminiscing of wartime bonds and sharing of photo albums.
Some special toasts were made for some of those who were unable to attend this year's rendezvous like PSG Darrell Holbrook and 1Lt. Frank Brokaw (C/3-8th Inf. 4th ID Cambodia). During the evening, a Special Presentation (with pictures, sound, etc.) by Dennis Vernacchia (HHC 1968/69) Army MARS Radio Station Operator at LZ BETTY was made in the late afternoon. It was a fantastic presentation.Sunday, June 17. Departure Day for most who attended the rendezvous. Some attendees planned to remain in Reno for another day or two before returning home. The TF 3-506th 16th Anniversary Reunion was another success by all standards, thanks to all who attended and helped to make it happen. There were 61 attendees. Some who had planned to attend were forced to cancel within the last few weeks or days prior to the rendezvous. Hopefully, for those who did not make it to ours will or did get to attend others for 2012. Many goodbyes were said, and Operation Reno 2012 terminated. The 2013 "Stand Alone Battalion" rendezvous will be at Paul "Ponytail" and Valerie Cauley's LZ in Indianapolis, IN.
